Ephesians 6:18-20

Matthew 7:7-8

What does prayer mean to you? For some, it feels like the perfect setup for falling asleep. For others, it’s repeating the same words or phrases long after they’ve lost their meaning. Many see prayer as passive—but for Paul, prayer is anything but. It’s a powerful weapon in the arsenal of those who follow Jesus.

At its core, prayer is simply talking to God—but it’s even more than that. Through prayer, we have direct access to the creator and sustainer of the universe. Think about that. God, who is all-powerful and all-knowing, wants to hear from you. He makes himself accessible to you because he wants to be involved in your life—and he’s delighted when you talk to him.

That’s why prayer matters so much in the heat of battle, too. Life can be brutal, and we don’t have what it takes to fight alone. But we have the all-powerful creator of the universe on our side, and he’s accessible at a moment’s notice. And talking to him, asking him for help, is what keeps us going when the going gets tough.

Jesus invites us in Matthew 7 to keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking. Keep talking to God. He cares deeply about you and what you’re going through. And while prayer may not change your circumstances immediately, or in the way you hope, that constant communication with God will keep you close to him—and that changes you.

You’re not alone, and you’re not fighting for God’s attention—he’s already with you, and he’s fighting right alongside you.
