Which came first – the chicken or the egg? It’s an age-old question; people either laugh and argue about it, or avoid it.
Which came first – the creation of the world or the Son of God?
This is not one we can avoid. This question impacts what we think about Jesus. Everyone has a belief about who Jesus is – but it’s only by exploring what Jesus said about himself that we can get an accurate view of who he is. John was a close follower of Jesus, and his account in the Bible goes all the way back to the beginning to tell us who Jesus is. Literally back to the beginning.
Genesis says, before the creation of the universe, “The earth was formless and empty." God existed before anything else was created.
John tells us in the first chapter of his gospel that the Word was at creation, the Word is God, and the Word became flesh and lived among us. But who is this “Word?”
It’s Jesus, the Son of God who came to take away the sin of the world. He lived and walked on earth until he died for our sins. John wants us to know that Jesus is God and that he lived and walked among us. As we read in the days ahead, we’ll see John tell us Jesus is the one who was promised, the Living Water and the Bread of Life, and the one with the authority to forgive all of our sins.
Pray: Dear God, I love reading the Bible! It is your love letter to your people, to tell us who you are, who we are, and the gift of salvation you offer through Jesus Christ. Help me to read and understand everything the gospel of John says about Jesus so that I can be a life changed by Christ. Amen.
