Though its exact origins are debated, the battle cry “Don’t fire till you see the whites of their eyes” is most often linked to the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. The command was simple: conserve your resources and make every shot count.
Ancient battles weren’t fought from a distance—they were fought face to face. That’s the mindset behind the imagery of the shoes of peace. At the time, Roman soldiers wore thick, studded sandals called caligae, designed to keep them firmly planted in the chaos of combat.
So, what keeps you firmly planted when life feels like a battle and your peace is under fire?
The gospel—the good news that we’ve been reconciled to God through Jesus—provides that firm footing when life feels unstable. It steadies our minds and prepares us to stand against temptation. It anchors us in an unshakable peace and the assurance that nothing can separate us from God’s love.
And it does more than help us stand our ground—it moves us forward. With that same assurance, we face the enemy and push back the darkness by sharing the rescue story of a God who came after us.
As we follow Jesus, we discover a peace that holds, even in the middle of the fight, because he has already overcome.
