Faith is an active, confident trust in God and his promises. It’s not a blind leap into the unknown, but a settled conviction in who God is and a willingness to rely completely on him.
With that in mind, Paul, the writer of Ephesians, compares faith to a shield. The word he uses (thureos) refers to a large, door-shaped shield designed to cover the entire body. It offered full protection.
In ancient warfare, enemies fired flaming arrows. These shields—made of thick wood and layered with animal hide—were often soaked in water before battle so they could absorb the impact and extinguish the flames on contact.
In the same way, faith acts as a protective barrier for those who follow Jesus. It shapes how we see and respond to life. It guards our thoughts against the enemy’s lies, accusations, and suggestions. And when disappointment, uncertainty, and worry rain down, faith absorbs the hit and extinguishes fear. It anchors us, even when we can’t see the outcome, because we know we’re not in the battle alone.
